Did Alexander Graham Bell invent the telephone?

When we were young, our science teacher most likely told us that the inventor of the telephone is none other than Alexander Graham Bell. But is that really the case?1876

Alexander Bell submitted his patent in 1876. However, as early as 1834, Antonio Meucci had already named and created the first working telephone. Even though the telephone then could not properly transmit conversations across the line, the creation formed significant foundation for Alexander Bell. Meucci's evidence in this case was disputed due to lack of material evidence of his inventions as his working models were reportedly lost at the Western Union laboratory.

That was not the only challenge Alexander Bell faced. While he was working on his invention, another scientist Elisha Gray was also working on his version of the telephone. The patent caveats of both parties were submitted on the same day and there were considerable debates on who came first. Eventually it was Bell's caveat that came first and he received the patent of the telephone.

This case study of the invention of the telephone provides us an important inspirational pointer. Without strong persistence, Bell wouldn't be able to be known as the inventor of the telephone as we know today. He encountered more than 50 other lawsuits and managed to win all of them. And therefore his legacy prevails...

Poking the Iron Ball

A very powerful motivational speaker is going to retire. Therefore, when he said he's going to give his last seminar, everyone thronged the box office and snatched all the seats.

On that very day of the seminar, the whole auditorium was packed with his readers, loyal fans, reporters and people who came to just learn from this powerful motivational speaker.

There was a huge and heavy Iron Ball on the stage. Arriving 15 minutes late, the speaker took his time to stroll down the aisle while the audience cheered on.

It was unusual in that the speaker did not have any microphone with him. He didn't greet the audience too. Instead he took out his pen from his pocket and began to poke the Iron Ball softly with the pen.

At the start, everyone was amazed. Everyone tried to predict what he wanted to show. However, after 30 min, 1 hour, 1 hour and 30 min, people started to leave their seats. Some had even thrown their programme brochures at the speaker for wasting their time. But the speaker continued to perform the same activity. Only a handful of people was still engrossed in the act.

At the 2nd hour, something happened. The 1-tonne Iron Ball began to turn and roll. No backstage crew could stop the ball from rolling.

The speaker then said, "The few of you here that see this happen had learnt the most. In life, you just need to keep doing and persist on, and you will achieve greatly!"

MLM firm found to have defamed/slandered rival

THEY ran down their main rival's products at two sales talks.
Now, the company, Meridian Life International, and its two employees have been found to have slandered its competitor WBG Network.
Both multi-level marketing firms sell a common range of health products containing a sub-species of the chlorella family of algae.
WBG has been around for 11 years and now has an annual turnover of about $45 million. Meridian is a relative newcomer, having just started in 2004.
The two employees of Meridian, Mr Lim Jit Shyan and Mr Ivan Tan, had been distributing the products, known as the Hunza range, for WBG until 2003, when they both left the firm.
Two years later, both men joined Meridian, which had obtained a licence from the Taiwanese supplier to distribute the products here.
At a sales talk on Meridian's premises on March 30, 2006, both made comments about their former company's products which Justice Andrew Ang ruled were defamatory.
Among other things, they told their audience that WBG's products no longer contained a vital ingredient and that WBG misrepresented its products.
Two days later, the two men repeated some of their remarks at another sales talk.
Among the audience at both talks was Mr Bruce Cai Qing - an active distributor for WBG since August 2002.
In this rare commercial defamation suit, both sides agreed at the start that Meridian would accept liability as well if the allegations against its two employees were proven.
It is not known if they are still working for the company.
Justice Ang ordered a separate hearing to assess the damages to be awarded, which will not be the $12 million that WBG, represented by lawyer Gabriel Peter, is seeking. The judge said WBG's evidence for its losses would support a claim of $8 million 'at best'.
Justice Ang noted that the second presentation was a covert sting operation set up by WBG to entrap Meridian, unlike the first, which might be a 'typical MLM sales' pitch.
The judge noted that Ms Sharon Ong, who attended the second session, admitted WBG employed her to record the remarks of Mr Lim and Mr Tan. Her role was to 'persistently' ask them suggestive questions to 'precipitate the making of defamatory remarks', he added.

Network marketers should take note of this news. It is common for network marketers to gather their downlines and do a bashing on other thriving rival MLM companies so as to instill loyalty as well as prevent their downlines from crossing over to another MLM company.

Do it right and set a good example by disseminating neutral information about rival MLM companies to your downlines. By doing so, you can gain respect from your fellow peers as well.

Everything is Big in Texas

Tom's friends were telling him about how everything is large in Texas and asked him to come over. Tom didn't believe it at all and intended to check it out for himself.

When he alighted at Texas airport, he was amazed at how BIG the airport was. Outside the airport, a limousine with ten doors came to pick him up. His jaw dropped when he saw how BIG the limousine was.

The limousine ferried him to the hotel where his friends were already waiting. They then headed to the restaurant to have their dinner. Looking at the menu, having in mind that everything is BIG in Texas, Tom decided to choose the smallest sized steak. However, when it was served, the steak was so BIG that he could only manage to finish eating a quarter of it.

Delighted and impressed with the BIG-ness of Texas, he excused himself to the toilet. He walked to the middle of the hotel lobby and shouted "Everything is Big in Texas" and then began to unzip and urinate.

"Tom! What are you doing?" his friends shouted. "That's the fountain, not the urinal!"

How to Excel Above Mediocrity

Ever wonder how you could be different from others? How do you actually excel above mediocrity and achieve results? Well, this article would hopefully give you some useful pointers in doing that.

Convert FEAR into ENERGY

To be different from others, you need to do what others fear to do. FEAR = False Evidence Appearing Real. Look at your fellow network marketers. If they fear public speaking, volunteer and do it! If they fear cold-calling, you do it first! That way, you are able to venture into a new market outside the reach of your fellow network marketers.

Curiousity is only the Beginning. Belief is the Fuel for Success

When you encounter a new concept, you would feel extremely excited for a very brief period of time. To sustain yourself and continue pushing forward, you have to commit yourself and believe in whatever you are doing. Believe that what you are doing is wrong, should be done, and must be done. A strong belief would then be the fuel for Success!

Income = Value x Time x Scalability

To boost your income in network marketing, you need to understand the Income Equation:

Income = Value x Time x Scalability

To increase your income then, it requires you to increase your value, time and scalability.

Value: Understand where is your standing at present. Are you still only bringing in appointments for your upline to present plan? Or are you presenting plan yourself already? As you increase your knowledge in the plan, platform and product, you increase your value at the same time. When you have a higher value, you will definitely increase your income range.

Time: You might be spending all the evenings in the week with your network marketing business, but quantity of time is not what we are referring to here. Quality of time is the one that matters! And Quality of time means the time you commit to valuable or productive activities. When you increase the the quality of time spent in your business, you will surely see your income rise.

Scalability: Initially you start off the business by closing sales one by one. When you derive more experience and knowledge, you will then proceed on to the stage and close sales by the dozens, hundreds or perhaps thousands. Pick up public-speaking. Train yourself starting with a small crowd and then slowly increasing your crowd. When you step foot on the stage, you will be able to sell your product to a greater group of people and your income will soar!

So how do we proceed from here?

Increase your time, value and scalability factors and prepare as your income rises exponentially!

Believe with a Strong Belief

Many a times, we get showered down by passing comments from people on the things we do. In whatever you do, be it network marketing or holding a salaried job, you need to have a strong belief. A Strong Belief in the company, the system, your products and services. This will then keep you going strong when times are hard.

But how strong a belief is strong enough? Well, read the following story...

Tom and Jane are a married couple. Tom loves to read and watch anything related to vampires. He loves vampires to the extent that one day, he revealed to Jane that he was a vampire and only wanted to drink blood for dinner.

Jane then opened the windows and allow the sun rays to shine in. Tom immediately hid below the dining table and shouted for Jane to shut the windows. "I am a vampire. I will get burnt by the sun!"

Jane began to get worried with her husband. Finally, she decided to bring him to a psychologist. Tom wore a hood and sunglasses to avoid contact with the sun. The psychologist then told Tom, "Vampires do not have blood in their bodies. Now let me see whether you have it."

The psychologist then used a syringe to extract blood from Tom. To everyone's amaze, Tom yelled, "Wow! New Discovery! Vampires do indeed have blood in their bodies!"

A Strong Belief is what Tom portrayed. Even when everyone around you proves that what you are doing is wrong and cannot work out, you go on to believe. Believe with a Strong Belief.

How do you believe with a strong belief?

Well, in the network marketing context, attending more of the product training and systems training would give you a clearer picture of the whole platform. Ask questions and get them resolved. Set yourself a target and no one shall sway you from your path. With a strong belief, you can then prevent yourself from accepting failure easily...

Problem? What Problem?

In your pursuit in building your network, you might encounter problems in your way. The problem could be as small as missing an appointment to as big as losing your entire network. However, problems only arise if you view the issues as "problems". Do adopt the "Problem? What Problem?" mindset and it shall help you in your MLM career.

"It's the way how you see the problem, not how you tackle it"

When you place a pen right in front of you (about 5 cm from your eyes), what you can see is a really big logo of the brand of the pen. Your vision is literally blocked. Now, pull the pen away further from you. Your vision is cleared and you can see the pen. When you encounter a problem, take a step back and you will have a different perspective and gain a new vision.

"When the day is darkest, the dawn is coming"

When you are troubled, always stay positive. The highest peak of the mountain could only stay at that level. The deepest ocean would have its seabed. You can't get any higher or lower than that. No matter how large you perceive of your problems, always understand that if you reached the bottom, there's no way you could sink anymore but to rise again!

Having Clear Goals

Once upon a time, there lived a sage which lived in the deep forests. One day, Jerry decided to pay a visit to the sage to learn from him. When Jerry arrived and made known his intentions, the sage proceeded to tie an apple to the branch of a tree. The sage moved back 50 metres, pulled out his arrow, and with his bow, he shot the apple accurately. Jerry was amazed.

Without a word, the sage tied another apple to the branch of a tree. This time, he blindfolded himself and then followed to shoot. However, this time round, he missed the apple by a big margin. Jerry was disappointed.

Jerry thought great of the sage but the miss dampened his spirits. He questioned the sage about it. The sage replied,"In life, one needs to have a clear target. Only when you have a clear goal, would you then be able to move forward in life."

This leads me into writing about proper goal setting today. Let's look at the SMART method of goal setting.

Specific - Gives you the clarity
Measurable - Goals set should be 3 times what you can easily achieve
Achievable
Realistic
Tangible

Difference between Goals and Dreams

Dreams generate the motivational strength for one to keep pushing through, but goals help you achieve your dreams.

Enjoy the process of goal setting. When you set your goals, it must be for your own sake. If this is so, you should be enjoying the process and of it.

Having Clear Goals in MLM

Power of goals can be optimised when you take in consideration the goals set by your downlines as well. Using teamwork and leverage, you can be better prepared in setting out your own goals and achieving it.
